On November 19, 2004, Monona Grove's remarkable 13–1 season ended with a 24–7 loss to Waukesha West in the Division 2 state championship game. Monona Grove bounced back in a big way Friday for Homecoming and Senior Night, shutting out DeForest 36–0 in its homecoming game and closing the 2026 regular season with an 8–1 record. Coming off a tough 7–0 loss at Waunakee, the fourth-ranked Silver Eagles responded with one of their strongest defensive performances of the season, while the offense generated 400 total yards and five touchdowns.

Since their first meeting in 1987, the two programs have played 25 times. Monona Grove leads the all-time series 14–11, with three consecutive victories heading into Friday. But perhaps the most remarkable statistic is how close the rivalry has been overall. Across those 25 games, MG has outscored DeForest just 518–494 — a difference of only 24 points over nearly four decades.

Undefeated Monona Grove travels to Waunakee on Friday night for a matchup between two state-ranked teams that have separated themselves from the rest of the Badger-Large. Monona Grove enters 7–0 overall and 5–0 in conference play, ranked No. 3 in the Bound Wisconsin Division 2 Coaches Poll. Few high school football players ever get the opportunity to build a four-year history against the same opponent. Deangelo “D-Lo” Clay will do exactly that Friday night. When Sun Prairie East comes visits the #2 Ranked Monona Grove, Clay will face the Cardinals for a fourth consecutive season dating back to his freshman year. His first appearance came under about as demanding a circumstance as possible: a 2023 WIAA Division 2 Level 2 playoff game.

Seven years after Monona Grove's last trip to Landsverk Field ended with Watertown celebrating their only victory in the series, MG returned in 2026 and emphatically changed the ending.

Monona Grove heads into Week 5 at 4–0, but Friday night's trip to Watertown comes with two unusual pieces of history attached to it: The last time these two teams played, Watertown won. That was seven years ago, on September 20, 2019, when the Goslings defeated MG 28–16 at Landsverk Field. It remains Watertown's only victory in the series and the most recent meeting between the schools. Friday will be only the fifth Monona Grove-Watertown game ever played.

Monona Grove entered Friday night ranked No. 3 in Division 2 and looking to open Badger Large play with another statement. It did not take long. The Silver Eagles scored on six first-half possessions, built a 42–0 halftime lead and rolled past Milton 42–7 at John Klement Stadium to improve to 3–0. MG finished with 360 total yards, held the Red Hawks to just 77, and continued to get production from a growing list of veterans, first-year starters and younger contributors.

Monona Grove began the school year on Tuesday Sept. 1st and its football team returns home Friday night at 2–0, having overwhelmed Janesville Parker and Madison La Follette by a combined 94–14 through the first two weeks. Milton enters at 0–2 following losses to Oconomowoc and Janesville Craig, but the Red Hawks’ record may be misleading. Recent history suggests MG should expect another fight. The last two meetings have been decided by just 12 combined points.
